Feral Sun

There’s beauty in keeping it simple.

Feral Sun - Save Yourself.

One of the featured bands at this years Hammerdown Festival in southern UK is Feral Sun, a powerful rock quartet from London.  Their latest release, “Save Yourself” is a slower and simpler vibe and feel when compared to many of the tracks on their 2014 release “Evacuate,” but worthy of mention, none the less.

Conveying an emotion that we can all relate to (losing a friend), it reminds us of some of the finer rock and metal ballads by Metallica, Linkin Park, et al.  Great guitar and drum tones (nice pan balance, too) provide a thick bed for the vocalist’s memorable and haunting melody.  Sounds like the bass player is utilizing a five string as he lays a simple and solid foundation through the song – especially in the guitar solo where the chord structure alters slightly from the rest of the structured parts (we always dig that).  It would be easy for a drummer to show off in a setting like this, but he doesn’t.  He displays maturity in his playing and composition by laying down a simple groove throughout the entire song.

There’s beauty in simplicity.  Most unsigned artists are so intent to prove themselves that they get in the way of their own chops, their own ability to shred and impress.  After a while (if they’re still together), once they find a groove and their confidence, they start to rely on their writing (if they’re doing it right), finding beauty in a simple melody, hook and presentation.  That’s exactly what is happening in this self-produced track.

We hope these guys catch on over here across the pond.  We first heard of them via the independent radio station, “Music Mafia Radio,” where “Save Yourself” found it’s way up to number 2 on their charts.  Carry on lads, good work!
