RVBY My Dear

A haunting pop-ballad that pulls from places as wide as her background.

Lush vibes with Black Moon

Gabbi Coenen (professionally known as RVBY MY DEAR) is no stranger to multiple continents, music scenes and genres.  Her lastest track, “Black Moon” is a haunting pop-ballad that pulls from places as wide as her background.

The track begins with a minor melody piano riff and vocals eq’d to give a hidden and dark feel.  As the band comes in for the chorus, the vibe gets lush and beautifully heavy with a diminished chord at the end of the chorus.  Broad chords from bell tones and a clean electric guitar take us through the second verse and chorus while the vocals continue to put us in a meditative state.  Coming out of the second chorus, the mix dries up quite a bit (less reverb), but the story gets more compelling lyrically and the lush feel returns as we hit 3:25 in the song.  If you’re a fan of Mazzy Star, The Sundays, Sarah McLaughlin – even Nick Cave – you’ll hear elements of them in her work.  This is a brooding and lovely track.

Checking out her social media you’ll see a mutli-instrumentalist favoring the playing bass, especially hard rock and punk.  Her YouTube channel has some great performance pieces that give you a strong feel for her artistry.  “Cycles” is a beautiful track we could hear filling up stadiums.  In interviews references periods of her life where she wasn’t listening to music.  These are healthy signs.  Strong writers can typically play multiple instruments, love multiple genres and aren’t afraid to not be creative at times.  Strong writers know that art comes from truly living, and sometimes, you need to avoid your art to create it.    Here’s hoping we’ll continue to see compelling work from her.
