Boy Meets World

Can you fix what you won’t let go?

With most artists we write about, there’s typically a few songs listed, a couple of gig photos, maybe some funny tweets – and then there’s shye.  He’s been releasing songs since 2018, has written two books, a line of merch and an impressive resume of videos.  This is an impressive foundation that will surely take him far.

In his social media, he doesn’t shy away from the challenges he’s faced, and the progress he’s made working with his therapist.  Thankfully for us, his most accessible artform is his music and “Boy Meets World” is a charming pop gem.  The vocals jump right in at the top of the song – conveying a sense of urgency.  The pre-chorus shows off some beautiful vocal chops that remind us of Charlie Puth and the chorus is gentle rise and flow that makes us want to roll down the window and stick our hand out as we drive.  Second verse jumps right in too continuing an effortless flow.  The song speaks of the challenges we all face in our mind – the demons we have – and the comforts we rely on to get us out of our own head.  Those swirling thoughts can be tough to manage, we interpret the bridge to be a visualization of that struggle, and as the song wraps up we realize we’ve been hit by a warm tidal wave of emotion.  What’s so great about this song is that it is jammed pack – not a measure wasted – but it doesn’t feel that way at all.

There’s a classy sensibility to his writing.  It’s Shawn Mendes and Charlie Puth and Owl City, broken down and reconfigured into his own voice.  You can tell by his website and work that he is methodical – taking his time to get it right.  It’ll be fun to see where he ends up, and who he shares his stage with.
