From The Start

Prolific is one of the best ways to describe the artist Maeleigh, he’s released 19 tracks since 2021. He’s an EDM & pop artist from the States who also posts a lot of tutorials about tracking, production and keyboard sounds on his socials. His latest track, “From the Start” is arguably his most commercial to date, and should gain him some considerable attention. Here’s our review….

It’s hard to make EDM, trance, dance pop - whatever you want to call it - and keep it interesting in terms of developing sounds, maintaining the beat and telling a compelling lyrical story. You might think it’s easier because it’s “all just synth stuff,” but it many respects you’re more limited because you’re lacking the live and raw energy of a room full of session players. To be compelling in this genre, you better know your frequencies and compressions - more so than live tracking, and you’re knowledge of old school synth waves needs to be deep. Maeleigh shows he’s got all that under control with slight variances in his kick and snare patches as the song progresses, as well some nice “up stroke” choices of chords in the first chorus and verse sections that really help to move the track. If you listen closely to all the swells (that are so prevalent in this genre), they change too, even if ever so slightly. Thankfully, when the focus should be on the vocals, he allows it, not letting the instrumentation overpower his message. The intro might throw you off a bit, but then when you hear the first line you’ll understand that that was intentional - he’s coming from a state of surprise, shock and confusion, so to have the intro be so thick and jumbled, it’s obvious what his intent is, it’s well played, and well produced. Lastly, the melody and the hook are solid. It’s a relatable feeling that sells well to anyone who’s had their heart broken.

How do you know when a song is good? When you can transfer it over to another genre. If you go to his Instagram page, you’ll see a post where he put an acoustic guitar underneath the lead vocals - and it works brilliantly. That’s one of the reasons why we like Maeleigh so much, and why we think this track is going to garner him the larger attention that he deserves.
