Saffire – Read Between the Lines

Ok, so we like to feature unsigned acts here at Phantom Power, but we have a soft spot for Gothenburg, Sweden, dirty B3’s, and vocals that remind us of the late great Ronnie James Dio.  So check out these skull crushers from southern Sweden.

There is some absolutely sick playing on this track, written by Tobias Jansson and Victor Olsson (fantastic Swedish names, btw, note the two s’s!).  Starting off we get a B3 drenched in distortion and panning between our speakers.  It plays the head twice, then the full band comes in, repeating it – driven by great guitar tones and a voice that obviously studied RJD and Holy Diver.  First verse changes the chord progression, nicely done, and sets us up for a chorus that changes chords again, leaning heavy on the bell of the ride – and everything sits perfectly, between the lines.  Second verse dirty’s up the groove just enough and the vocals climb higher into a bigger payoff in the 2nd chorus.  With the solo section, the virtuosity of the band starts to shine.  First up, face melting guitar riffs that Yngwie himself would approve – then the B3 takes over, as if to say, oh, you think that was dope?!  Watch this!  After that, the full band pounds out the head again, bringing us to a 3rd chorus break down, a kick build, and a kick ass payoff.  Beautiful.  This is metal in all it's glory. We don’t want to give the rest of it away – you’ll have to listen for yourself.

This band has released 3 records and appears to be doing really well in Scandinavia – hitting the stages at some of the bigger festivals.  That’s a huge accomplishment, we all know those Vikings love their metal and there’s no shortage of amazing bands up there.  Right now, they’re trying to get onto the KISS cruise so make sure you check out their Facebook page.  Skol!
