What You Gonna Do?

Elizabeth King – What You Gonna Do?

In 1969, Elizabeth King led the group, Gospel Souls, fronting an all-male backing group.  Shortly after their LP release, she was seriously injured in a car accident and feared she’d never walk again.  She devoted her life to gospel music, released a full-length record in 2021 and keeps on keeping on with an new EP this year.  She is now 78, has 15 kids, and at last count during an NPR interview, 58 grandchildren.  If that summary doesn’t move you to listen to her music, then you really do need some soul.  Thankfully, “What You Gonna Do” is here to get you moving.

How do you write a blog about the perfect R&B / Gospel song?  The picking bass line on a Fender P, the Rhodes, the B3, the nasty guitar riffs split between the speakers, the visions of Aretha Franklin that come with the backgrounds…. the groove, that sweet groove that only comes from players who grew up near the Delta, that beautiful union between the drummer and bassist that click tracks love to destroy …. and lead vocals that just ache with hurt and praise at the same time.  Seriously, it’s perfect.  We know that art is subjective, but for the love of God if you don’t think this is perfect, you need to go to church.

Thank you, Elizabeth.  We love your music and we’re so happy you’re still with us.  Please take care of yourself and keep the great music coming!
