Oktaf Kanis

Coming from the Darkside

Indonesian rock musician Oktaf Kanis has released his latest single, “Coming From The Darkside”. This comes on the heels of at least nine other releases this year, adding to an impressive collection of songs.

Sung in English, this pop rocking track still has hints of some of the rhythms and inflections that are used in Southeast Asia, Micronesia and Indonesia - it’s subtle, but effective. This is a non-stop groove track from start to finish with a slight breakdown for the bridge and a cool use of reverbs, compression and distortion throughout the looped track. If you’re not paying attention (or your speakers are too loud), you’ll miss out on some of the nice acoustic riffs on the right side, or the subtle keyboard patches right down the middle. There’s a nice juxtaposition between the minor feel of the main head riff, and the major key riffs coming out the right side. With it’s extended intro, it kind of reminds us of a trance track, or even a jam band stretcher. Great groove, nice track!

Make sure you scroll down to catch his socials to other works. “My Radio” is a nice, slower tempo groove that reminds us of UK rock. “Come On” continues in that same fashion - once again featuring some really cool drum mixes and a bit of a spoken word delivery. It’s clear that Oktaf has a host of influences at his disposal and is quite prolific - we look forward to what he’ll be doing next!
