Susy K

Beautiful R&B, from Scotland

Do you like R&B with beautiful Rhodes tones that pan between your speakers?  Great drum sounds?  Fluid bass lines?  Surprising horn lines?  Oh, and great vocals with harmonies tight as wicker?  Good, we do too.  Then you should listen to “Hear it From Her” by Susy K out of Scotland.  There is so much to love about this track.  The chord progression alone has us hooked, but then you add in her melody, tone and backgrounds and this track hits you like a brick.  It’s a fantastic R&B feel.

The track starts soft with just Susy and a Rhodes as she unveils the story of a broken heart.  When the pre-chorus changes come around, you realize this is not going to be your standard tune.  Great, unexpected changes.  The chorus opens up like a wide room – you can see her standing there in front of the person who scorned her, with wide open arms – “Is this the thanks I get?!”.  Love the change at the end, by the way.  As the second verse settles in, we’re groovin’ and the accusations get stronger.  Nothing gets in the way of the mix, and the lyrics and story are on point.  Beautiful breakdown for the bridge as the Rhodes tones try to smooth the pain, and the chorus has a sturdy payoff that perfectly fits the genre.

We love her voice and can’t think of a singer she sounds like.  Yeah, she’s got a little bit of Jill Scott and Tori Kelly, and if you look at her Insta you can hear more killer jazz chops – but her pronunciation is positively unique.  Could it be her Scottish background?  Perhaps.  Whatever it is, it’s gorgeous.

The bass riff at the end of the track is brutal.  Thanks.  I think I’ll put my Fender Jazz away now.  😉  While I do that, you should go listen to this track.
