Kingna Scott
Kingna Scott is a multi-instrumentalist from Virginia. Drummer, lyricist, bassist, vocalist, pianist, beat maker, guitarist – she does it all. Check out the video for “Fast Food Life” and you’ll see where we’re coming from - she’s got a solid understand of how to create a great track. One of her tracks, “VA Sway,” got significant play in her home state and features a great flow from Pusha T. But the track we’re reviewing is “Believer,” an optimistic call-to-arms for those who need a reminder of the power of positive attitude.
Track starts with a choir-like riff, over sound effects that conjure up images of something taking flight – that the listener needs to be aware of the journey that’s to come. With the first verse, she comes in with both melody and harmony at the same time over a syncopated, reggae feel that is Fugee-esque. A wonderful, flowing bass line adds just the right touch of movement, similar to McCartney’s playing in Something, it’s not overstated – it’s warm and in the pocket. The chorus comes in and expands on the same vibe as the intro, with a nice lead line tucked away in the corner of the mix.
There’s great lyrical flow through the chorus. Not just the rhymes, but the way she toys with a minor key vocal riff over the chord changes. It’s a happy vibe, a believe vibe, a hopeful vibe. Second verse is more to the point of the first, and we’re right back into the happiness of the chorus. I love the KFC reference in here – you’ll have to hear it for yourself. The fact that she probably laid down all the parts herself is even more impressive.
She’s released 5 tracks on Spotify so far and shows exceptional potential. Her tracks show a variety of musical styles and solid lyrical work. We look forward to what she’ll be releasing next!
