The Sixters

All female band from Ukraine

“Hold” this band in your hearts.

The Sixsters is an all-female rock band from Ukraine, all under the age of 20.  Their bio says they are “kids,” but given the quality of music they are releasing, we won’t call them that.

The song “Hold,” is an uptempo acoustic track.  You can’t help but wonder if when they sing “they will never find us, they will never catch us,” that they are talking about their war-torn country.  When you compare the lead vocal to some of their earlier pieces you can hear the growth. The earlier tracks are strong too, but it’s obvious that vocalist Kira Kasyanova is really settling in to a strong, Paramore-esque tone.  It’s an intimate vibe that works with a bit of cajon underneath – but it doesn’t tell the full story of the band.

As strong as “Hold” is, you’re missing out on the bigger picture of their tones and potential if that’s all you were to listen to.  “Median Minion” charges right out of the gate with a punk style, melody and syncopated hits that has you nodding along with approval.  “Ha Kaby” has a beautiful, funky opening with great tones.  When the vocal comes in, it sucks you into a beautiful and intimate space.  The chorus hits beautifully with a tempo change and you’re right back to the groove before a great spoken word section that breaks up the dynamics well.  “Sixteers,” the lead track from their 2021 album, lets you think the whole record is going to be straight ahead punk and rock, but so many of the tracks on the record have beautifully layered backgrounds, keyboard parts and feels that you can’t help but be a fan.

Check out their YouTube page where you can see several live performance videos, interviews and some production videos as well.   There’s a lot of great bands in the world that need some love.  Considering what these young women are going through right now, we hope you put them at the top of your list.
