Bad Dreams
My Latest Failure is a hard hitting trio from Middlesex who have released a dozen singles to date. Theirs is a sweaty, hardcore punk sound that has a bit more melody than most bands of this genre. Diving through their social media, you can tell this band is the real deal and no stranger to the clubs and dives that keep this artform alive. It reminds us of some of the bands we’d see in and around Long Beach and Long Island in 80’s & 90’s. Here’s our review of their latest single, “Bad Dreams”
Right off the batt we get punched in the face with a heavy tone and riff before the bass and drums drop in at about 160 bpm. There’s some solid metal core underneath the lead vocal line that adds a gritty feel of anxiousness. Dig the voicings from the guitarist who’s using some nice extensions to add some harmonic depth in the 2nd rhythm track. You’re not going to get Geoff Tate style vocals in this genre, it would defeat the purpose. Vocals here are solid punk - more about the emotion of “jumping off a bridge” rather than spinning some intricate yarn of live and loss. That’s the beauty of punk that they capture well.
The heavy lifting of the track is done by the guitars and group vocals. It’s a full on mosh pit. There’s urgency and desperation in the vocals, but a sense of positivity from the guitar tracks and the extensions mentioned above. It’s a bit of a loose groove throughout - not much change from the drums and bass in their parts throughout the song, but it doesn’t need it, and here again, that’s the beauty of punk.
This is one of those bands we’d love to see in a club, to get the full experience. The band’s music would be one thing, but the energy in the room would be another.
