The Horn

Listen to this, “Do It Now”

The Horn is a pop quintet from the UK that has managed to rack up an impressive monthly listener count on Spotify with just 4 releases, as well as some high profile gigs around London and Nottingham. It’s a classic quintet line up with the lead singer adding some guitar, when required. That’s the proper way to do it. The more members you add, the messier it can get, but this group has done an exceptional job not only with songwriting, but with having everyone stay in their lane to do what’s best for the song. Here’s our review of “Do it Now.”

It’s an all start with the band, and we’re getting a Psychedelic Furs vibe. The tones are tight, the vocals a bit understated. In the first verse, the bass and guitar line do a smart interplay with each other as well as melody. Vibe is solid and nobody is stepping on anybody’s toes. With the first pre-chorus we get just the right amount of uplift with a change in the melody and the key patches. You can feel the intensity building. As the chorus hits, the vocals hit their higher register and we absolutely adore the chord changes. This is some very smart songwriting and production. It’s an arena sized hook, for sure. Love the brief minor outro from the chorus before we get back into the head riff that gives the right amount of separation before the second verse.

The lyrical message is one that is inspiring and relatable to all - and they’ve done a great job in their social media of using some outtakes from the song to promote it. If you’ll forgive the reference, it kind of reminds us of Scarface - the worlds is yours, take it, do it now. Tony Montana would dig this message. We’re not advocating that lifestyle of course, it’s just funny that’s that what this song made us think of.

Second verse and chorus build on the great foundation of their predecessors. Really have to compliment the band on it’s construction and production. The rhythmic breaks of the bridge are very smart, especially with the drum beat staying static. It’s a short section - only 4 bars - but helps the final chorus blow up. Great choice of drum patterns in the final chorus to go double-time, and the choice of endings is perfect. No wonder these guys are off to such a fast start, this is absolute quality pop.

Make sure you scroll down to check out their socials and other tracks. “Always Late” is a self-deprecating ballad with tones that are quiet different from “Do it Now,” doing a great job of expanding their canvas. “Passion” is pure pop. Tight mix and tones, with great hooks all the way through. “Power Show” could be a stadium killer with it’s subtle, biting lyrics, great chord progression and beachy drum vibe. It’s an impressive four songs they’ve released - we look forward to what they’ll be doing next!
