I Can’t Go On (Without You)
Part Jamie Cullum, part Jeff Buckley, Paul Vinson is an indie artist based in Nashville who racked up over a million streams with his 2018 track “Last Summer.” Since then he’s added five more single and an EP, and a host of shows in TN, FL and the south. “I Can’t Go On” is the 4th single he’s released this year and looking at his posts from the past, it’s safe to say he’ll be back on the road soon. Here’s our review of the track.
It’s an all start with the band and vocals as we get an early glimpse into Paul’s strong and passionate alto, with a smooth ability to switch between his head and chest voice. Lyrically, it’s a desperation tale that he portrays with just the right amount of angst and tenderness at the same time. Love the line from the second verse, “running like a dog, chasing a car all over town” as the mix and tones get heavier to take us deeper on this heartbreak. His vocal performance is exceptional, especially the oscillating melody in the chorus over the word “on” - that’s some great writing right there. Song structure is solid with playing that is not too flashy, and the note choice from the bassist is exceptional as they lead us just the right way. Guitar tones in the solo / outro are absolutely perfect. This is a track that could fit in Cullum or Buckley’s set with ease.
Have to also say how much we love the mix. It’s a wide open spectrum of great rock tones that remains dry and keeps the focus where it should be, on the vocals. That classic synth patch backing up the second and final chorus is wonderful. It’s definitely a current and modern sound overall - but doesn’t sound like so much of the over processed, over compressed tracks being released today. This is a breath of fresh air, kudos to Paul and everyone else that played on the track.
Make sure you scroll down and catch his socials and other tracks. “Last Summer” is an absolute pop gem, an up-tempo and mildly funky heartbreaker that once again displays some impressive vocals. “Drama Queen” is a rocking track with elements of Harry Styles and 90’s punk. “Came Around,” one of his first songs from 2017, is a beautiful ballad, and probably the most expansive of his sounds in terms of mix. It’s obvious that Vinson has the ability to write a great track, we look forward to what he’ll be doing next!
