You Should Find a New Boyfriend

Litvar is a pop rock trio based in Connecticut that formed as a studio project in 2019. In just two years they’ve released a dozen songs, racked up close to 200,000 streams and have started to tour. If you’re a fan of The Band CAMINO, The 1975, and a splash of The Dead Milkmen, this is a band to check out. They have a depth of sound that most bands take a few years to figure out. Here’s our review of their latest single, “You Should Find a New Boyfriend.”

It’s a whimsical start with what sounds like a old music box and a simple, sampled drum beat around 84 BPM underneath an acoustic line. Melody comes in for the first verse and it’s a smart build. Great rhythmic interplay of the melody against the steady backbeat and fill ins from the “music box.” Love the phrasing from the vocalist. A second voice enters in what we think is a pre-chorus and there’s a really cool difference between the voices, that’s a great falsetto. Ok, so, maybe that’s not a pre because we’re quickly into verse two. That’s cool - definitely a surprise - and we always like that. If you’re a regular to this blog you know that one of my guiding philosophies regarding musical boredom is that if I can guess where the song is going to go, you’re going to loose me. (I listen to the song in chunks while I write. I’ll play a section, write down my immediate thoughts and then listen to that section again). Love the lyrical message here, too. There’s some great honesty in the message - will I change too much? Probably. Go “meet the one, find yourself, move on” you should find a new boyfriend.

Second verse starts after a bit of a break, and the vibe is slightly elevated. Great job bouncing between the vocal takes and setting up the next chorus. Also dig how this second chorus is twice as long. Then, BOOM, the damn track explodes like a classic breakup fight in the middle of a crowd. They take the hook from the first two choruses and create a new one, and a new jam. There’s some really creative writing here to do that - especially love the beautiful chord progression they employ under the words “move on” - I’ll call that the bridge. The song comes crashing down to end like the final scene of a bad teenage breakup. She’s exhausted, I’m exhausted, it’s toast, move on. Great stuff. Check out the video here.

Pretty rare to come across a band this young that is so poised with their compositions and arrangements. The band consists of Joe, Rex and Violet. The produced it, and the mix is solid. There’s great separation in all the EQ’s, clear vocal dynamics, a rich library of tones and enough space in the mix to handle the back end explosion. Great work!

Make sure you scroll down to catch their socials and other tracks. “Hi I’m Andy” is reminiscent of classic British Punk Pop - great feel and lyrics. “World Wide Web” has a really cool intro and host of great tones that show their sonic depth. “Sertaline,” from their LP “The Greatest Movie of All Time” is a great mid-tempo track that highlights their unique use of lyrics and rhymes. It’s an understated jam that succeeds in its simplicity of arrangement and vocal presentation Love the trumpet solo at the end. “You’ve Got Mail” is downright quirky and satirical. Dig it. This is definitely a talented band that is not afraid to take chances and stands to go far!
