Why (Did You Do This To Me)

Here’s a prolific pop writer from Pleasant Grove, UT that I found on Wavlake the other day, meet solo artist Bennyjeans. He’s a bit of a ghost on the Interwebs, which only leads to the mystique. All I can tell is that he’s from the 801, and has played a bunch of shows around SLC, solo, and with a band.

Every now and then you just need a cool drink of water, a drive with the windows down - just something chill, and that’s what this song provides. Let’s check it out!

We’re coming in at about 119 BPM, and primarily moving between the tonic and subdominant chord. Absolutely love the fade in, reminds me of radio when I was a kid - plenty of bumper space. Voicings on the keys are really nice - great pull from the major 7 in each chord, and the melody drips over the whole thing when the vocals drop in as the band pulls back - lovely stuff. With the prechorus, there’s a nice little change up by adding in the submediant chord. Presentation is simple and light, with a clean mix. Focus is on the vocals and guitar line, where it should be.

With the chorus, he draws from his falsetto and strong alto tone - kind of reminds me of Charlie Puth, in all the good ways. It’s a pleasant love song vibe with a serious question, but presented in such a way that it brings back those great memories of young love, young questions, young consequences. I love how music can tough situations like this (listen to the first verse), and make them more palatable and relatable.

If you pick the pieces apart, you realize this is one of those tracks with a host of simple parts, that together create a solid piece of art. Individually, they don’t stand out, but put together they are greater than the sum of their parts. This is a solid example of how to write a great pop song, well done Benny! (Nice guitar tones and solo, btw).

Check it out on Wavlake and send him some #Sats!
