Indiana native stands out with unique voice

Beautifully crafted, “Hurts Like Hell”

Indiana native Kara Cole has the type of voice that is instantly recognizable.  Part Janis Joplin, part Jennifer Neetles, part Emmylou Harris, but enough individuality to know that Kara is unique.

“Hurts Like Hell” is a beautifully crafted track with warm, analog tones.  The dobro, Rhodes, B3, drums and electric are meshed together in this heartbreaking tune that sits perfectly in the Americana vibe.  None of the instrumentation gets in the way of the vocal.

The track starts with just voice, backed up by a Dobro and subtle Rhodes as the lyrics speaking of yearning – waiting on someone from the beginning of time who was already leaving them in the back of their mind.  As the pre-chorus starts, the atmosphere builds with a moody string-like arrangement of mood, and the drums pull you into the chorus in a fashion that reminds us of a Tom Petty or Jason Isbell ballad.  You’ll need to hear the track to get the true meaning behind “Hurts Like Hell,” and we think you’ll love the payoff.  The B3 solo at the end is a work of art.

“Hurts Like Hell” is one of three Kara has released this year as a solo artist.  “3 Weeks” is another haunting ballad that reminds us of Emmylou’s “Wrecking Ball” project – lovely work.  “I’m Fine” is an up tempo run with great 335 tones, unique rhythm changes – a quality vibe with Bakersfield feels.  All three songs are worth your time.

Kara is also half of Keller & Cole, a folk and Americana duo out of Indiana that formed in 2014.  Listening to their work as a duo, and Kara’s as a solo artist, it’s obvious that Cole has found a niche (or two) that works.  We look forward to hearing more releases!
