Romance is Bad.

A couple things we know about SW Aussie Gracie Jean after listening to “Romance is Bad.”  First, somebody really broke her heart.  Second, she’s got amazing friends and a positive outlook on life.  Third, she’s got an open, airy, alt-country style of music that sweeps over you like the breezes on Wanderrabah Beach. Here’s our review of her latest single, “Romance is Bad.”

The track doesn’t follow the standard form, and that suits us just fine.  It takes a while to spin this whole yarn, and the guitar solo that comes after the first chorus is well placed (with a nice change in the chord progression, too).  Her voice is synonymous with Kacey Musgraves and Mazy Star.  Her performance is authentic, you can tell she’s happy and sad at the same time (get it?) as the verses are a bit sullen, but chorus joyous.  The track is heavy on reverb, but it matches the vibe well - it's a bit like 60’s California pop, with elements of guitar tones from The Heartbreakers.

Sonically, this track is right in line with the other 8 on her upcoming record under the same name, “Romance is Bad.”  Very ambient and dreamy with spacious guitars and keyboards.  Backbone drum tones that hold great structure but don’t overwhelm you - similar to what you’d hear in 70’s American tracks.  “Forgettable” is a great example of this.  Songs like “Little Mountain Home” are heartbreaking and honest, but there’s also happiness to be found in the title track, “I Don’t Wanna Sing the Blues Anymore”, and more.

If Alt-country is your vibe then check out this track and album.  We think you’ll appreciate the entire mood.  We look forward to seeing how far this project will take her.
