Mia Delamar

(You’d be) Silly (to not hear this R&B gem)

Atlanta native and Belmont alumnus Mia Delamar has a Major in Vocal Performance, a Minor in Dance and a work ethic and spark that is establishing a solid career. Her latest single, "Silly”, showcases her ability to deliver a great hook, a compelling and relatable story, and a killer dance groove with her stunning voice. Here’s our review.

Less than a measure into the track, you can tell it’s going to bounce. 84 bpm, e minor jam, classic R&B groove. When her vocals drop , they come in on a solid melody based on the minor triad and are immediately joined by solid BG’s. Lyrically, she’s telling the tale of falling for the wrong guy, not seeing the signs she should have. Don’t mistake the word used for the title as a clue that this is some sort of happy-go-lucky track. It’s not. Though her tone is smooth, wide and impeccable (see Belmont grad, above), she knows how to clamp down on the right phrases and words to give this track (and the loser who wronged her) the proper amount of bite. The first verse cuts like a razor and does a great job of setting up the chorus.

Pick any killer female R&B singer (or Supergroup), and the tracks she’s lays down in the chorus will go toe to toe with them, any day of the week. The hook is solid (nice 1, 2, 3 melody riff) and the BG’s are fresh and punctual - nothing tacky or overstated. Great intervals - solid production - strong ad libs. The mix is precisely what we’d expect from the ATL - it’s surgical. There’s a wide open space for her to do her vocal work, everything is clean and nothing gets in the way. Second verse is a bit shorter than the first and that’s fine with us. We want to hear that killer pre-chorus and chorus again, and she delivers with just the right amount of added parts to beef it up just enough. We’d love to hear this in a club setting - this is a theme that is destined to resonate with the female crowd.

Nice quick little bridge and we’re back into the chorus before she gives us a solid rap breakdown where she has no problem torching the dude who wronged her, while accepting her role in this fiasco too, “silly me”. Love it. Last chorus brings us a solid display of her ad lib ability, and thankfully she doesn’t over do it (too many R&B singers that can riff will riff for the sake of showing off), she keeps the focus where it should be - on the song. It’s dead stop dry ending, and we’re ready to hit repeat. Great track, Mia!

Make sure you scroll down to catch her socials and other tracks. Going through her videos you’ll see she’s got an exceptional talent for dance and choreography, in addition to knowing her way around the studio process (see her Insta page for the post this past July when she was tracking the song). The video for this track, as well as Cool are top shelf quality and will hopefully get her career to the next level. We need more artists like Mia in the community, writing great tracks, being comfortable in her skin and bringing more people into the beautiful genre of R&B.
