Be Well

Here’s a great track I heard this morning on #AdamCurry’s “Boostagram Ball” on the Fountain App.

Amber Sweeney is a songwriter, vocal producer, singer and resident of Nashville, with deep roots in the PNW. She has an impressive catalog of at least 33 songs listed on the big streamers, and a host of them over on Wavlake.

You’re going to be taken aback by the quality and depth of her vocals, “Be Well” just scratches the surface of power. Let’s check it out!

Track gets off with a gentle vibe in B flat, around 79 BPM. Beautiful descending chord progression that is part blues, part neo-soul and thankfully not your typical Nashville progression. Love how she pulls you around the 6- and #5 with the Rhodes voicings and wispy B3. I typically love to hear a vocalist go up when the voicings descend, but she has such a beautiful tone that I can’t help to get pulled in. With the pre-chorus, the band starts to rise and she pops off a gritty note that lets you know you’re listening to a master of their craft.

The chorus is affirming tale of love and discovering the good in yourself. Love how when the lyrics become uplifting, the music is based off a climb - that’s some smart writing. It will have you swaying along and feeling warm, not just with the message, but the production too.

There’s a lot of instrumentation going on, but everything is beautifully played and balanced. Nothing is getting in the way. You’ve got drums, percussion, bass, Rhodes, B3, guitar, lead and backing vocals - the whole arrangement is gentle, but full. Absolutely love it!

With the bridge and the final choruses, you feel like you’re in the Church of Sweeney. Adore the slight gospel feel that this gives with its massive R&B structure and voicings. To pull this off vocally, you need to have complete control over every aspect of your tone - the grit, the tenderness, the warmth - you need to portray the gentleness of a whisper, the roar of pain, and fulfillment of discovery. Amber’s voice does that, and then some. Most singers could not pull off this track. And the fact that she wrote it, speaks volumes to her credibility. The track clocks in at 4:40, and I wouldn’t mind if it stretched a little more. Would be great to hear her band jam this out on stage!

Make sure you check out the other tracks she’s posted on Wavlake and send her some #sats! “Breathe” is in the same R&B vibe as “Be Well,” with similar instrumentation, a few more hits, and a punchier vocal line. “Chasing Ghosts” has a rockier vibe than the other tracks, and definitely shows off her grit. “Believe in Love” is another great R&B groove with a killer drum tone and two beautiful keyboard lines with the piano and Rhodes. And, she’s got six more up there for you to check out.

Check it out on Wavlake and send Amber some #sats!
