Grinding out Hip Hop from the Midwest

Grinding out Hip Hop from the Midwest

There’s an honesty to Hip Hop that can’t be faked.  Those Kings from The Bronx that created the movement in the 1970’s, straight from the urban struggle they had to endure, created a flow that was as natural as it was needed.  Today, the few originators that remain can take solace in the movement they started, the impact they’ve had, and how their struggle is relatable, even to white middle America, who share some of the hardships (but definitely not all).   That’s how we came across Caleb Woodrow from Indiana.

You can tell he’s a student of the genre, and a grinder.  He’s got about 10 tracks released on Spotify right now, and “Save Me” displays a vulnerability that most wrappers are afraid to show.  For example, “It’s hard to ask for help when you can’t handle rejection.”  “Trying to talk to God but I haven’t got reception.”  “Not trying to save the world I just got a few suggestions.”  “It’s hard to be yourself when you’re worried about perception.”  He’s not bragging, he’s not full of bravado, but he’s got a good flow and he’s showing that side of himself as an artist that is bound to connect with fans.

The track itself is solid.  A nice little piano vibe along with sidestick and kick pattern.  Nice loops underneath, and some cool BG’s.  He’s letting the lyrics and his delivery carry the weight, and it works.

Check out his twitter feed and you’ll see why we think he’s a grinder, why we think he could be around for a long time.
